What Is Grow-A-Frog?

How do I take care of it?
To start off, you are socially dead if you don't know what a Grow-A-Frog is! (Just kidding!) Grow-A-Frog is the best way to buy and raise an African Clawed Frog. When you buy the kit, you get a Tad-Pool (small tank), some Nutri-Rocks (gravel), Deco-Plant (fake plant), Stage One Food (food...duh), and the Fun and Facts Handbook. You also get a certificate for a free Tadpole.

In the handbook, there are very short-but-sweet instructions on how to raise your tadpole, so it turns into a healthy frog. I would suggest you reading this before and after you get your kit, because I have hints and tips all through this site.

If you want an African Clawed Frog, only get Grow-A-Frog. It is the easiest, least expensive, and probably most fun way to enjoy and raise a frog.

First thing's first. You need to buy a Grow-A-Frog kit. If you buy them in stores, they usually cost $15.95. If you buy it through the mail, it will cost $5 extra for shipping. You can buy a kit at the Learning Tree, or most science stores. Other wise, check out my links page for sites that sell them.

When you receive your kit, fill out the certificate for a tadpole first. Mail the certificate to receive your tadpole through the mail. It's a good idea to have some bottled water on hand so you are ready when your tadpole arrives. After you fill out your certificate, go ahead and read the handbook. It has some neat facts in it, but I got the impression that it's just there to sell you other items...
Your Grow-A-Frog kit will contain:

Tad-Pool (small tank)
Nutri-Rocks (gravel)
Deco-Plant (fake plant)
Stage One Food (food)
Fun and Facts Handbook
Certificate for a free Tadpole
Even though the book recommends to buy a Stage Two frog tank when your tadpole turns into a frog, I wouldn't. Your frog will get pretty big compared to the tadpole, and if you buy a real aquarium tank (like a ten gallon tank), it will have more room to swim around, and you could put in real plants. This would help keep the biological filter balanced, which is very healthy for the tank.

If you want to use tap water, you need to buy Water Crystals from the company. They condition the tap water so it is safe for the frog to live in. If you use Water Crystals, you know they won't hurt the frog, and the Lifetime Guarantee won't be broken. (The Lifetime Guarantee states that if your frog or tadpole dies at any time, you can get one new frog for free. If you don't use Water Crystals, and your frog dies, they might say "The handbook said to use the Crystals, so we can't give you a free frog. It's your fault. Sorry")

Before you do anything, make sure all the contents that are supposed to be in your kit, are actually there and intact. If they are, great! If not, call the company and they will send you whatever wasn't included.

If everything looks good, then let's get started! First, you should go out and buy some natural spring water. (Probably a gallon) You will need this to keep the tadpole in. If you have it ahead of time, your tadpole will be ready to be put in right away. After you get the water, and you send in your certificate, then you can start setting up your tank.
Place the Deco-Plant on top of the little knob on the bottom of the tank. Then pour in the Nutri-Rocks evenly over the bottom of the tank. If you want, you can put in the water now, but you don't need to.

When your tadpole arrives, let it sit at room temperature for one hour. Then pour in the tadpole and it's shipping water, as well as the bottled water, into the tank, careful not to disorient the rocks and plant. When your tadpole is in and adjusted (which could take a few hours), it should be swimming with it's head down, and the tail up. This means it's happy and healthy.

Now would be a good time to start preparing for when the tadpole turns into a frog. (If you are wondering about taking care of your tadpole/frog, scroll down and click "Go Back.") You need to buy either a real aquarium tank, (which is recommended) or a Stage-Two tank from the company.

You also are going to need food for your FROG. You can either buy ReptoMin from a petstore (more for your money) or you can buy the food from the company. Either way, they both have the nutrients and good stuff your frog needs to grow and thrive. You will also need a real plant. You need a real one because it will help balance the biological filter which is necessary for you to have a healthy tank. (If you decide to just buy food from the company, use the "Stage-2 Food Special", which is "buy two Stage-2 food (large size), get one free.")

If you want, you can put in a filter, and other things in your tank. This is all mentioned and listed in step two.

*Make sure you have read the rest of the "Taking Care of Your Grow-A-Frog" section before you read this one.*

When your tadpole has been put into it's tank, water and all, wait a few hours. On the same day though, feed it one level scoop (from the feeding spoon provided) to your tadpole. It will NOT totally dissolve. Then each day afterwards, feed it one level scoop of food. (Never ''double'' feed it though. If you go on vacation and miss a few days, only feed it one scoopfull!) When the front legs on the tadpole have totally "arrived", switch to the frog food. Make sure the morsels aren't too big though. Your tadpole is officially a frog when the tail has disappeared by about 3/4. This is when you want to transfer it to the larger tank.

To do this, scoop up the frog with a container, from the tank, and transfer him to the other tank. DO NOT TOUCH THE FROG!!!!! If you do, you may end up killing or poisoning it. Any oils, scents, lotions, soaps, or anything whatsoever on your hands will be absorbed through the frogs skin. Just scoop it up with a container full of water, and place it gently in the larger tank. (I do know someone whose brother touched the frog when he wasn't looking, and the frog was dead in a matter of HOURS! The reason was because his brother had just washed his hands, and some soap was probably still left on his hands.)

Make sure the water is treated with Water Crystals before you place your frog into the tank though. (2 crystals per gallon of water. Make sure they dissolve totally before you add the frog in the water. Cold water isn't needed though.)

Once your tadpole had turned into a frog, you can start feeding it the frog food. Feed it frog food about 3 to 5 times a week. Feed it enough food that it can eat in about 5 minutes. Overfeeding a frog (or fish) is one of the easiest ways to kill it. The frog can go a few days without food, but don't give it too much!

That's it! If you have any questions, or any confusion ('cause this is a confusing page) then feel free to e-mail me. I love getting e-mail, especially from my site, so go ahead!
